Resonance

…I find I’m moving to the rhythms of Your grace. Your fragrance is intoxicating in our secret place…

We’ve talked about the vibrations through the tension of a fishing string. As we can see in the illustrations above, there are other applications and uses. Tension still matters–too much tension and you prevent the vibrations, too little tension and you can’t sustain the vibrations through the system.

Resonance occurs when an external force vibrates at the same natural frequency as a system, causing it to vibrate with greater amplitude. When we are in a “Steady State” of presence, our lives start to “resonate” with the frequency of the Spirit. This is why the voice is so clear—it matches the “natural frequency” of a heart aligned with Micah 6:8.

When we talk about “tuning the heart,” we are looking at how we can align our internal “frequency” to match the heart of God.

The Physics of Spiritual Tuning

1. The “Reset”: Psalm 51:10

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

In the world of instruments, a string can become stretched or warped over time, losing its ability to hold a note. This scripture is the “factory reset.” It is asking the Father to replace the warped parts, so the heart is even capable of resonance again.

2. The Calibration: Colossians 3:1-2

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above… Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

This is the act of turning the tuning peg. If our “frequency” is set to “earthly things” (anxiety, status, or the “artificial suffering” mentioned in the sermon), we will never resonate with the Spirit. “Setting the heart” is a deliberate adjustment of our internal oscillation to match the “things above.”

3. The Perfect Match: Acts 13:22

“I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.”

The phrase “after my own heart” literally describes two systems in perfect resonance. David wasn’t perfect, but his heart was tuned to the same “key” as God’s. When God “vibrated” with a command or a desire, David’s life naturally vibrated in response. This is the definition of the “Steady State” mentioned in the sermon—a place of constant presence rather than constant pain.

Destructive Interference

In physics, if two waves are out of sync, they can actually cancel each other out. This is called Destructive Interference.

  • The Concept: When we “tune” into the noise of the world while trying to hear God, the two signals create “spiritual silence.”
  • The Solution: This is why Proverbs 4:23 tells us to “Guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Guarding the heart is the “shielding” that prevents outside noise from interfering with the resonance of the Spirit.

Connecting to the “Voice Behind You”

Davis Potts highlights Isaiah 30:21—that voice telling us where to walk. Through the lens of resonance, that voice is clearest when our heart is “tuned” to that specific frequency. If we are tuned to the world, that voice sounds like static. If we are tuned to the Kingdom, that voice sounds like a rhythm that guides every step in the symphony of life.

Reflection Questions: Testing Your Frequency

1. The Warped String (The Reset)

  • Identifying the Warp: In Psalm 51:10, David asks for a “clean heart.” Where have the “strings” of your life become warped or over-stretched lately? Is there a particular area—like your career, a specific relationship, or your self-image—that has become so distorted it can no longer hold the “note” of God’s peace?
  • The Factory Reset: Do you allow God to replace the “warped parts,” or are you trying to play a divine melody on broken equipment? What would it look like to sit still and let Him “reset” your internal frequency today?

2. The Tuning Pegs (Calibration)

  • Setting the Dial: Colossians 3 tells us to “set” our hearts. Tuning is a deliberate, mechanical act. What “earthly things” (status, anxiety, or the need to be right) have been cranking your tuning pegs lately?
  • The Comparison Check: If you compare the “sound” of your life to the “sound” of Jesus’ life (mercy, justice, humility), are they in the same key? What is one specific “adjustment” you can make this morning to align your thoughts with “things above”?

3. Destructive Interference (The Shield)

  • The Noise Floor: Are you experiencing “spiritual silence”? Sometimes this isn’t because God isn’t speaking, but because “Destructive Interference” is happening—the world’s frequency is canceling out the Spirit’s. What is the loudest “competing signal” in your life right now?
  • Guarding the Shield: How are you guarding your heart (Proverbs 4:23)? Are you allowing “static” (sensational news, gossip, or constant digital noise) to interfere with the resonance you’re trying to build?

Lord, the Grand Composer of all things,

I am amazed that You designed my heart to vibrate at the same frequency as Yours. I recognize that I often try to play my own song, only to end up with “warped strings” and the “static” of my own effort.

  • Perform a Factory Reset: Create in me a clean heart, O God. Replace the parts of my spirit that have become brittle or out of shape. Make me capable of holding Your note again.
  • Calibrate My Mind: Help me to reach for the tuning pegs of my heart today. I deliberately set my frequency to “things above.” When I am tempted to tune into the frequency of fear or pride, nudge me to turn the dial back to You.
  • Shield Me from Interference: Guard my heart from the noise that seeks to cancel out Your signal. Silence the destructive interference of the world’s opinions so that the “voice behind me” comes through with perfect clarity.

Let me be like David—a person whose heart matches Yours. When You move, let me move. When You speak, let my life amplify Your melody. Let me walk in the “Steady State” where Your rhythm is the only one I follow.

Amen.
