Decay

In physics, resonance doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Any vibrating system faces “damping”—external forces like friction or air resistance that try to sap its energy and stop the vibration. To stay in resonance, a system needs a constant input of energy. This is where we move from the sound of the Spirit to the work of the Spirit.

The Physics: Without a continuous energy source, resonance eventually fades. This is known as “decay.”

The Scripture: Hebrews 2:1 warns us to “pay the most careful attention… so that we do not drift away.”

Decay (the drift) is a thermodynamic reality. If you aren’t actively putting energy into your resonance the friction of life will naturally dampen you.

Entropy: the scientific law that states that all systems naturally move toward disorder and randomness unless work is acted upon them.

The Wide Gate (Maximum Entropy): Matthew 7:13-14 describes the wide gate as the easy path. In science, this is the path of highest entropy. It requires zero effort to let a room get messy or a heart to become hardened; it happens automatically as a natural process.

The Narrow Path (Low Entropy): The “Narrow Gate” is a state of low entropy—it is highly ordered, specific, and intentional. The sermon notes that “few find it” because it requires the “work” of obedience.

Following God isn’t “unnatural” because it’s painful; it’s “unnatural” because it resists the universal slide toward disorder.

Transformation: Once we establish that it takes work to resist entropy, we look at where that energy comes from. This leads directly to the First Law of Thermodynamics (Conservation of Energy).

The Living Sacrifice: Romans 12:1 calls us to be a “living sacrifice.” In thermodynamics, a sacrifice isn’t the destruction of energy; it is the transformation of it. Heat can be turned into work. The “fiery trials (attack)” mentioned in 1 Peter 4:12 are the heat. In a balanced faith, that heat isn’t wasted; it is captured and transformed into the “work” of perseverance and character (Romans 5:3-4).

We don’t just “suffer” for the sake of suffering. We allow the heat of our circumstances to be transformed into the kinetic energy of our mission.

“Resonance feels effortless once you’re in it, but staying there is the fight of your life against Spiritual Entropy. The world is designed to dampen your resonance with the Spirit and pull you toward the disorder of the ‘Wide Gate.’ Being a ‘Living Sacrifice’ means taking the energy of your trials and, instead of letting it burn you out, letting it fuel the work of staying tuned to the Father’s voice.”

Reflection Questions: Resisting the Decay

1. The Damping Force (Friction)

  • Energy Drain: In physics, damping is the friction that stops a vibration. What are the “damping forces” in your life right now? Is it the busyness of your schedule, the cynicism of your environment, or a lack of rest that is sapping your spiritual energy?
  • The Input Source: Resonance requires a constant input of energy to survive damping. Where are you getting your “work” from? Are you trying to fuel your faith with your own willpower, or are you plugged into the constant energy of the Holy Spirit?

2. The Entropy Check (Wide vs. Narrow)

  • The Path of Least Resistance: Entropy makes it easy for a room to get messy or a heart to get hard—it happens automatically. In what area of your life have you “stopped working,” allowing it to drift toward the “Wide Gate” of disorder and randomness?
  • Intentional Order: The “Narrow Path” is a state of low entropy—it is highly ordered and specific. What is one specific, intentional act of obedience you can perform today to resist the “natural” slide into spiritual laziness?

3. The Heat Exchange (Transformation)

  • Capturing the Heat: 1 Peter 4:12 speaks of “fiery trials.” Right now, does your suffering feel like it’s just burning you up (wasted heat), or are you letting God capture that energy?
  • The Kinetic Mission: How can the “heat” of your current struggle be transformed into the “work” of perseverance? What would it look like to stop asking for the fire to be removed and instead ask for the fire to be converted into fuel for your mission?

Lord of Order and Source of All Energy,

I acknowledge that the world I live in is designed to dampen my resonance with You. I feel the friction of life trying to pull me toward the “Wide Gate” of ease and disorder.

  • Reverse the Decay: I pay careful attention today so that I do not drift. Where entropy has taken hold of my heart—where I have become lazy, cynical, or messy—I ask for Your Spirit to bring divine order.
  • Fuel the Vibration: Thank You that I do not have to generate my own power. Be the constant input of energy that keeps my life vibrating at Your frequency. Help me to resist the damping forces of worry and worldliness.
  • Transform My Trials: I bring my “fiery trials” to You. Do not let this heat be wasted. I surrender my pain as a “living sacrifice,” asking that You transform the energy of my suffering into the kinetic work of character, hope, and love.

I choose the Narrow Path today. I choose the work of obedience over the ease of the drift. Keep me in a steady state of resonance with Your heart.

Amen.
