Today’s devotion builds on yesterday.
“Let your eyes look directly ahead And let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you. Watch the path of your feet And all your ways will be established.” Proverbs 4:25–26 (NASB95)
Day 7: The Fixed Point (Navigating the Fog)
The Core Concept: Triangulation and The Fixed Point
On the Appalachian Trail, there are sections where the “White Blazes” (trail markers) disappear—due to fog, snow, or overgrown brush. In these moments, a hiker cannot rely on their “feelings” or the ground beneath their feet, because their inner ear can deceive them into walking in circles.
To find the way, they must use Triangulation. They look for a Fixed Point—a mountain peak, a star, or a compass bearing—that does not move. By aligning themselves with that stationary object, they can maintain a straight line even when the path is invisible.
The Spiritual Isomorphism
The sermon’s conclusion is the ultimate navigational guide. When the “trail markers” of life disappear—when the pandemic returns or the “Wall” hits—we use the Three-Point Alignment provided in the message:
Look Back (The Landmark):
We look back to the Cross. In navigation, this is called a “Back-sight.” In surveying and navigation, a back-sight is a reading taken on a point of known elevation or coordinate to establish the baseline for moving forward. By looking at where we started (the finished work of Jesus), we ensure our current line is straight. If we lose sight of the Cross, we lose our “Foundation.”
“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, Who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were hewn And to the quarry from which you were dug.” Isaiah 51:1 (NASB95)
When the white blazes disappear, this is the command to take a spiritual back-sight. Looking back to the “rock” (the finished work of the Cross) provides the foundational coordinate needed to calculate your current position in the fog.
“…having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone.” Ephesians 2:20 (NASB95)
The cornerstone is the ultimate fixed reference point in construction. It determines a straight path. If you lose sight of the cornerstone, the entire trajectory of the hike veers off the path.
Look Up (The Compass):
We look up to Jesus. He is our “Focus.” He is the North Star that never shifts regardless of the “pandemic” around us. When we feel “messed up,” His unchanging nature gives us our true heading.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 (NASB95)
This is the definition of a fixed celestial point. The pandemic, the Wall, and our own feelings are in a constant state of flux. Jesus is the absolute true North that remains stationary, allowing us to calibrate our spiritual compass regardless of the external weather.
“Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.” Colossians 3:2 (NASB95)
The insight to shift reliance from our surroundings (which is obscured by fog) to the celestial fixed point (which sits above the weather systems of the world).
Look Forward (The Destination):
We look forward to The Promise. This is the “Finish Line” in Heaven. The preacher said we do our “duty until the day we get called up”. We aren’t just wandering; we are “marching toward” a specific coordinate. Triangulation requires a target coordinate. We aren’t just surviving the fog; we are actively closing the distance to a specific, guaranteed finish line.
“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:14 (NASB95)
The Apostle Paul is describing forward kinetic motion (“pressing on”) dictated entirely by a fixed future coordinate (“the goal”). The promise of Heaven is the final point of alignment that keeps the momentum going when the trail gets incredibly steep.
Reflective Question for Day 7: The trail markers might be foggy today, but the Fixed Point hasn’t moved. Are you looking at the “fog” of your circumstances, or are you triangulating your life between the Cross, the Savior, and the Promise?
Lord, The Way,
You are the Master Navigator of our lives. We confess that when the fog rolls in and the clear markers of our path disappear, we are too quick to trust our own internal senses. Forgive us for the times we have wandered in circles, relying on our shifting feelings and the uncertain ground beneath our feet instead of Your unmoving truth.
Father, when our circumstances obscure the way forward, give us the discipline to pause and triangulate our position. Help us to take a spiritual back-sight to the Cross. Keep us anchored to the Cornerstone, so that our heading remains straight no matter what obstacle we encounter.
Jesus, be our True North. When the weather systems of this world bring confusion and exhaustion, help us to look up and calibrate our compass to You. Give us the focus to set our minds on Your unchanging nature, trusting the fixed point of unchanging Truth over the temporary storms around us.
Holy Spirit, keep our eyes locked on the final coordinate. Fuel our forward kinetic motion so that we do not merely survive the fog, but actively press on toward the guaranteed finish line of Your Promise. Establish our trajectory, keep our line straight, and guide us safely home.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
