Today’s devotion builds on yesterday.

Day 3: The Mother Tongue

Scripture Focus:

  • “And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”1 Corinthians 2:1-2
  • “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”Micah 6:8

The Framework: Linguistics

Imagine a toddler learning to speak. They do not start by studying a textbook on syntax, memorizing verb conjugations, or analyzing the complex rules of grammar. They simply spend time in the presence of their parents, listening to their voices. The rules and complexities of the language naturally follow the relationship.

This is how we are meant to relate to God versus how religion teaches us to relate to Him.

The Message

Religion often functions like a rigorous, exhausting linguistics class. It demands that we master the rules, the religious deeds, and the deep intellectual understanding of scripture before we feel worthy to approach the Father. We mistakenly believe that human wisdom, eloquence, and perfect performance are required to please Him.

“A little knowledge of God is worth more than a great deal of knowledge about Him.” ~ J.I. Packer

The Apostle Paul was a man who possessed as much knowledge of the Scriptures as anyone could have. Yet, he recognized that true transformation doesn’t come from an intellectual grasp of rules or persuasive human wisdom. He made a conscious effort to empty himself of all the things that would merely impress people. Instead, he determined to know absolutely nothing among the church except for Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

Instead of striving to bring God “10,000 rivers of oil” or obsessing over performing perfectly , the Lord simply asks us to walk humbly with Him. You do not have to be eloquent to receive the gospel or to be called to this ministry. When we pray for the knowledge of the new covenant to be unlocked in our minds and hearts, we begin to learn the language of grace. We learn it not by striving to master the rules, but through the simplicity of walking with Him and focusing on Jesus.

Application

Evaluate how you are approaching your relationship with God today. Are you frustrating yourself trying to memorize the “grammar rules” of being a good Christian, or are you simply spending time listening to the Father’s voice? Focus less on the complex rules of your faith today, and more on simply abiding in the conversation.

Lord Jesus,

Thank You for inviting me into a loving relationship rather than an exhausting religion. I confess that I too often treat my walk with You like a rigorous class, obsessing over the “grammar rules” of being a good Christian and trying to prove my worth through perfect performance, eloquence, or human wisdom.

Forgive me for complicating what You have made so simple. Help me to empty myself of the need to impress You or others with my religious deeds. I don’t want to exhaust myself trying to bring You 10,000 rivers of oil; I simply want to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with You.

Unlock the knowledge of the new covenant in my heart today. Teach me to quiet my striving and to sit in Your presence, listening to the Father’s voice with the simple trust of a child learning a mother tongue. Let me know nothing else today except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
