Today’s devotion builds on yesterday.

“But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man.” Galatians 1:11
Day 6: The Immutable Standard
The Ear-Tickling Trap It is incredibly tempting to seek out a version of the gospel that offers a “new thing” or a “cool thing” to hear, simply to tickle our ears. Because the raw, unedited truth of the gospel often makes us uncomfortable, we can easily fall into the trap of adding the traditions of men or taking away the parts that challenge our flesh. Paul marveled at how quickly the early church turned away from the grace of Christ to a different, perverted gospel. If at the core of our lives and our gatherings, we are not anchored in the pure gospel of Jesus Christ, we are ultimately just making it about ourselves—seeking to impress others with “zingers” or trying to please men rather than God.
The Isomorphism: The Immutable Standard vs. Fraud In the world of finance, auditors measure a company’s records against an immutable framework of standards (such as GAAP). These standards exist to ensure that financial reality is accurately and honestly reported. If a company alters the numbers to please its shareholders, or keeps “cooked books” to hide uncomfortable truths, it is committing fraud.
Spiritually, the gospel of Jesus Christ is our immutable standard. When we alter the message to avoid making ourselves or others uncomfortable, or when we blend the pure grace of Christ with human traditions, we are keeping cooked books. Paul made it exceedingly clear: if we are altering the standard to please men, we can no longer be bondservants of Christ. We must cling to the original, unedited framework.
“For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10
The Audit Trail of the Heart
- The Origin: The true gospel is not according to man, nor is it received or taught by man; it comes exclusively through the revelation of Jesus Christ.
- The Temptation: We must constantly guard against the desire to be entertained by a gospel of mere head knowledge or messages designed just to hit us with “zingers”.
- The Standard: We must ensure our hearts remain genuinely before the Lord, demanding that Jesus Christ—and only He—is preached.
Famous Quote to Ponder
“There is no security against false doctrine like a firm grasp of the truth.” ~ J.C. Ryle
Reflection & Application
- Check the Ledger: Have you subconsciously adopted any “traditions of men” into your faith that you treat as equal to the gospel?
- Examine Your Motives: When you discuss your faith or serve in ministry, are you seeking to please and impress men, or are you operating as a bondservant of Christ?
- Embrace the Discomfort: What parts of the true gospel make you uncomfortable, and how can you submit to those truths today instead of taking them away?
Lord, the Author and Finisher of our Faith,
We come before You and declare that Your gospel is the only standard by which we desire to be measured. We repent for the times we have sought out messages that simply tickle our ears, looking for something new and cool rather than resting in the finished work of the cross.
Protect us from spiritual fraud.
- Forgive us for the times we have added our own traditions or taken away from Your Word simply because the truth made us uncomfortable.
- Strip away any perversion of the gospel that we have allowed into our minds and our gatherings.
- Keep us from the temptation of trying to impress one another with our words, and return us to the simplicity of Christ.
Make us true bondservants.
- Break our desire to please men, and give us a holy reverence that seeks only to please You.
- Let the gospel we live and preach be driven by a genuine revelation of Jesus Christ, not by the teachings of man.
- Center our lives entirely on You, so that at the core of everything we do, only Jesus is preached.
We ask that Your unchangeable truth would anchor us today and always.
In the sovereign name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
