“And I heard another voice from heaven saying, ‘Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.’” Revelation 18:4 (NKJV)
“For the Lord has chosen Zion, he has desired it for his dwelling, saying, ‘This is my resting place for ever and ever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it.’” Psalm 132:13-14 (NIV)
Day 4: From Babylon to Zion
We are presented with a spiritual “map” consisting of two opposing territories: Babylon and Zion.
Babylon literally means “confusion”. In a spiritual sense, it represents the “world system”—a structure built on materialism, sensuousness, and pride rather than the principles of the Lord. The message warns that we are currently “steeped in Babylon,” which has become a dwelling place for every “foul spirit”. To live in Babylon is to live in a state of spiritual confusion where the values of the culture override the values of the Kingdom.
Zion, conversely, is the destination for the “remnant company”. While it is a physical mountain outside Jerusalem, it is symbolically the place where those who want to “go all the way with Jesus” walk spiritually. Zion is described as a “holy place” characterized by:
- The dwelling of the Lord and the place of His glory.
- A place of singing, joy, and shouting.
- A place of quick answers from the Lord and the fire of His presence.
- A place of restoration for the backslidden.
The call for the believer is to “come out” of the Babylonian system—to refuse its “stinking attitudes” and ungodly divisions—and to aspire to walk in the “beauty of holiness” found in spiritual Zion.
“Babylon is the world-city; Zion is the city of God. You cannot live in both at the same time.” ~ Augustine of Hippo
“Zion is where we all want to get to as Christians… it is the place of beauty for ashes and the oil of joy for mourning.” ~ Charlie Walker
Navigating from Babylon to Zion requires more than just a change of location; it requires a change of heart. We must recognize where we have allowed the “merchants of the earth” or the “abundance of luxury” to dull our spiritual hunger.
- Ask yourself: In what areas of my life am I still following the “principles of the world” (Babylon) rather than the “principles of the Lord” (Zion)?
- Action Step: Identify one “Babylonian” influence in your life this week—perhaps a source of materialism, pride, or confusion—and intentionally “come out of it” by replacing that influence with a “Zion” activity, such as singing, praise, or intercession.
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the clarity of Your Word that distinguishes the confusion of this world from the holiness of Your presence. We hear Your voice calling us today to “come out of Babylon,” and we ask for Your strength to separate ourselves from the materialism, sensuousness, and pride of the world system.
Lord, forgive us for the times we have been “steeped in Babylon” and have allowed the culture to override the values of Your Kingdom. We choose to leave behind “stinking attitudes” and ungodly divisions, setting our hearts instead toward spiritual Zion.
We desire to be part of the “remnant company” that walks in Your strength and seeks Your glory above all else. Let our lives be marked by the singing, joy, and shouting found in Your dwelling place. We ask for “quick answers” from Your throne and the fire of Your presence to guide our way.
Lord, bring restoration to the backslidden and trade our ashes for Your beauty. Give us the oil of joy for mourning and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. May we walk in the beauty of Your holiness, governed only by Your principles.
In the name of Jesus, our King and Redeemer, Amen.
