“Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God; for He has given you the former rain faithfully, and He will cause the rain to come down for you—the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.” Joel 2:23 (NKJV)
“Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.” James 5:7 (NIV)
Day 6: The Former and Latter Rain—The Great Convergence
The “signs of the times” are linked to the biblical agricultural cycle of the “former” and “latter” rains. In the natural world of Israel, the former rain (autumn) softened the parched ground so the seed could be planted, while the latter rain (spring) matured the crop for the final harvest.
The message reveals a powerful spiritual mystery: in the last days, God is bringing these two rains together. This convergence creates a supernatural acceleration. What once took years to grow and harvest will now happen rapidly. We are entering a season where the “plowman will overtake the reaper” (Amos 9:13).
However, there is a warning attached to this promise. While the rain is falling, many in the church are in a state of “spiritual slumber.” The message notes that the “thief in the night” only catches the one who is sleeping. To benefit from the latter rain harvest, our hearts must be “soft earth,” not hardened by the distractions of Babylon. We must be awake, alert, and ready to work in the fields while the window of opportunity remains open.
“The former rain was the outpouring of the Spirit in the days of the Apostles; the latter rain is the outpouring of the Spirit in the last days for the ripening of the harvest.” ~ Charles Parham
“God is going to do a quick work. The former and the latter rain are coming together for a rapid harvest of souls… we must wake up because the thief is coming for those who are asleep.” ~Charlie Walker
A technical understanding of harvest requires preparation. You cannot harvest what was never planted, and you cannot plant in ground that has not been softened by the rain.
- Ask yourself: Is the “soil” of my heart soft enough to receive the seed of the Word, or has the “heat” of the world made me hard and unreceptive?
- Action Step: Identify one person or “field” you have given up on. Today, ask the Holy Spirit to pour out the “latter rain” on that situation, believing for a rapid, supernatural harvest that defies natural timing.
Heavenly Father,
We stand in awe of the season You have brought us into. We thank You for the promise of the former and the latter rain falling together in this hour. We thank You that You are a God of the harvest, and we praise You for the supernatural acceleration where the “plowman overtakes the reaper.”
Lord, we ask today that You would continue to soften the soil of our hearts. Wash away any hardness, bitterness, or cynicism that has built up through the “heat” of living in this world. Let our spirits be “soft earth,” ready to receive the seed of Your Word so that it can mature rapidly by Your Spirit.
Holy Spirit, we hear the warning and we choose to wake up. We refuse to remain in a state of spiritual slumber or complacency while the harvest is ripe. Shake us from our sleep! We do not want to be found unprepared like those caught by a “thief in the night.” Instead, fill us with Your light and Your power.
We declare that this is a season of rapid restoration and soul-winning. Let the convergence of Your rains bring forth a yield in our families, our communities, and our own lives that defies natural explanation. We give You all the glory for the harvest that is to come.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the Lord of the Harvest, Amen.
