Daniel 12:4 – “…many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

Isaiah 5:20 – “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

Joel 2:28 – “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh…”

Day 2: Discerning the Times

If you look around at our modern world, one of the most obvious characteristics is a deep, underlying restlessness. The Bible warned that in the last days, people would run “to and fro”. We live in a culture where people are constantly running from one place to another, frantically filling their schedules, yet often feeling empty inside.

Alongside this physical and mental exhaustion, we are witnessing a profound spiritual disorientation. We are living in an era where the lines of absolute truth are intentionally blurred. As the prophet Isaiah warned, we have reached a point where society actively calls good evil, and evil good.

“Discernment is not a matter of simply telling the difference between right and wrong; rather it is telling the difference between right and almost right.”Charles Spurgeon

Because of this inversion of truth, we face a massive threat to our faith. As the brilliant Bible scholar Derek Prince noted, deception will be the greatest problem in the last days. The enemy’s strategy is not always an outright, terrifying attack; often, it is a subtle twisting of the truth designed to lead believers astray.

“A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.”Charles Spurgeon

Yet, in the midst of all this confusion and deception, God has not left us defenseless. He promised that He would pour out His Spirit upon all flesh. But there is a crucial catch: the Lord can pour out His Spirit, but if you do not actively receive it, it will not change your life. We must cultivate a heart that is ready and willing to receive the Spirit’s guidance, for it is the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth and gives us the discernment required to navigate a dark world.

Reflection Question

  • Are you passively accepting the shifting morals of our culture, or are you actively relying on the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to give you discernment in a deceptive world?

Life Application

  • Slow Down: Counteract the cultural pressure to run “to and fro” by intentionally carving out quiet time today. Be still and allow God to speak to you.
  • Test Everything: Do not take every message you hear at face value—even within the church. Measure every teaching, cultural trend, and piece of advice against the uncompromising truth of Scripture.
  • Receive the Spirit: Take a moment to explicitly ask the Lord to pour out His Spirit upon you. Open your heart to receive His wisdom so you are equipped to discern the subtle deceptions of the enemy.

Heavenly Father,

We come before You in an age of great motion but little peace. In a world where so many are running to and fro, frantically searching for meaning in the temporary, we ask for the grace to be still and know that You are God.

Lord, we recognize that we live in a day where the lines of truth are being blurred—where evil is called good and darkness is presented as light. We ask for a heightened spirit of discernment. Grant us the wisdom to see past the subtle deceptions of the enemy and the courage to stand firmly upon the absolute truth of Your Word.

We do not want to be a generation that hears of Your Spirit but never experiences Your power. We actively open our hearts today to receive the promised outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Fill us until we overflow, anchoring our minds in Your wisdom so that we are not tossed about by the shifting winds of culture. Let Your light shine clearly through us, exposing the darkness and leading others to Your path.

In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
