Matthew 9:37–38 – “Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.’”
Luke 10:2 – “Then He said to them, ‘The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.’”
Day 1: The Urgent Call to Harvest
When we look at the life and ministry of Jesus, it is clear that He had a profound and urgent burden for the harvest. He did not view the world simply as a place of chaos, but as a field ready to be reaped. He commanded His followers to lift up their eyes and look at the fields, declaring that they are already white for harvest.
The Lord is calling each of us to be harvesters today. However, there is a distinct problem that Jesus identified: while the harvest itself is truly plentiful, the laborers willing to do the work are alarmingly few.
“The Spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions. The nearer we get to Him, the more intensely missionary we become.” — Henry Martyn
Because the laborers are few, our first response must be prayer. Jesus explicitly instructed us to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out dedicated laborers into His fields. Yet, we cannot simply pray for others to go while we remain comfortable; we are meant to be the answer to that very prayer. We are called to step into the fields and bring people into a saving relationship with Christ.
“If a man has no passion to save those who are in the darkness of soul, then he himself has never been saved.” — Charles Spurgeon
In a world filled with endless distractions and pursuits, it is easy to lose sight of the bottom line. But when everything is said and done, the only thing that truly matters in the end is whether or not a person has a genuine relationship with Christ. Everything else will fade away, leaving only the eternal impact of the harvest.
Reflection Question
- Are you actively participating as a laborer in God’s harvest, or are you sitting on the sidelines assuming someone else will do the work?
Life Application
- Lift Up Your Eyes: Consciously change your perspective today. Look at the people in your daily life—your coworkers, neighbors, and strangers—not as interruptions, but as a field that is “already white for harvest”.
- Pray for Laborers: Take time right now to specifically obey Christ’s command by praying for the Lord to send out laborers into His harvest, and ask Him to make you one of those laborers.
- Prioritize the Main Thing: Evaluate your spiritual priorities. Since a relationship with Christ is the only thing that matters in the end, ensure that building that relationship in yourself and sharing it with others is your primary focus.
Lord God Almighty,
You are the Sovereign Lord of the Harvest, and we come before You today with hearts humbled by the magnitude of Your vision. Forgive us for the times we have walked through this world with our heads down, consumed by our own schedules, anxieties, and temporary ambitions. Today, we ask for an immediate shift in our perspective. Give us spiritual eyes to lift up our gaze and look upon the fields around us. Help us to see our communities, our workplaces, and our families not as places of random chaos, but as fields that are already white and desperate for Your truth.
Father, we hear the sobering words of Jesus echoing through the centuries—that the harvest is truly plentiful, but the laborers are few. We refuse to sit idly by on the sidelines of Your Kingdom, assuming someone else will do the work or waiting for a more convenient season to speak Your name. We repent of our spiritual passivity and our fear of man. Break our hearts for what breaks Yours. Let the urgent need for laborers grip our souls so deeply that we cannot remain silent or indifferent.
We explicitly offer ourselves to You today. We lift our hands and say, “Lord, send me into Your field.” Grant us a holy boldness to preach the gospel, a relentless compassion to seek out the lost, and the wisdom to navigate the harvest fields with grace. Remind us every single day that when the noise of this life fades and the final curtain of history falls, the only thing that will truly matter is a genuine, saving relationship with Jesus Christ. Anchor our lives to this eternal bottom line. Use us as instruments of revival to bring many sons and daughters into Your glorious Kingdom.
In the mighty, matchless name of Jesus, Amen.
