“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7
“As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” 1 Peter 1:14-16
Day 1: Cultivating the Fear of the Lord and Holiness
We live in an incredibly fast-paced, highly distracting generation. It is an environment where we can easily feel disconnected, isolated in our inner spirits, and pulled in a thousand different directions by cultural trends and shifting standards. In the midst of all this noise, a foundational truth of the Christian faith has quietly slipped away from the modern landscape: the true, reverent fear of the Lord.
When asked what the absolute priority should be for instructing the next generation today, seasoned minister Don VanHoosier didn’t skip a beat: “I will be teaching them the fear of the Lord.” As the great twentieth-century theologian A.W. Tozer once observed:
“The decline of the knowledge of the holy has brought on our troubles. A rediscovery of the majesty of God will go a long way toward curing them.”
To the modern ear, “fear” sounds restrictive or terrifying. But scriptural fear isn’t a cowering dread of a cruel tyrant; it is a profound awe, a holy respect, and a deep-seated reverence for a magnificent Creator. Reflecting on this life-changing shift in perspective, Oswald Chambers noted:
“The remarkable thing about God is that when you fear God, you fear nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God, you fear everything else.”
Charlie Walker reminds us that the fear of the Lord goes hand-in-hand with holiness. Holiness simply means being set apart for God’s purposes. When we lose our awe of God, we lose our desire to be holy, and we begin to let the casual compromise of our culture seep into our lives. But when we choose to live with an eye toward heaven—revering His name and honoring His character—our perspective shifts. We stop looking for how close to the line of compromise we can walk, and we start looking for how closely we can walk with Jesus.
Daily Challenge
Identify one area of your life—whether it is a media habit, the way you speak, or an unaddressed compromise—where you can actively choose holiness over cultural conformity today. Make a conscious decision to pause before you act, inviting a holy reverence for God to guide your next step.
Holy and Almighty Father, the One who is worthy of all glory, honor, and praise.
I come before You today acknowledging that You are the Lord of hosts, majestic in holiness and awesome in power. Forgive me for the times I have allowed the frantic noise and shifting standards of this world to dull my reverence for You. Forgive me for treating Your presence casually and for letting cultural compromise creep into my heart, my thoughts, and my actions.
Holy Spirit, I ask that You thoroughly search my heart and break any chains of complacency within me. Rewire my inner man today. Pour out a fresh spirit of wisdom and understanding, and teach me what it truly means to walk in the fear of the Lord—not in a spirit of cowering dread or bondage, but in a state of deep, holy awe that purifies my motives. Deliver me from the fear of man and the desire for worldly approval, anchoring my soul entirely in Your truth.
Give me the strength to stand firm as a part of Your set-apart remnant, choosing the path of holiness even when it means standing alone. Let my life be a clean vessel, purified by Your Word and dedicated completely to Your purposes. Guide my steps, guard my mind, and let everything I do today bring honor to Your great and worthy Name.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
