“Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world…” Philippians 2:14-15
“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.” 1 John 3:1
Day 6: The Characteristics of a Child of God
There is a profound difference between simply knowing about God and actively walking in the mature identity of being His son or daughter. True spiritual maturity isn’t marked by how much theological information we can recite, but by the practical, everyday evidence of our character. Charlie Walker notes that manifested sons and daughters of God carry distinct indicators: they do not love the pattern of this world, they speak truth in love, and they show forth the praises of God even when surrounded by a crooked and perverse generation.
Perhaps one of the most convicting markers of a true child of God is the command to do all things without complaining, murmuring, or disputing. When the Israelites were delivered from Egypt, an entire generation missed their inheritance because their default response to hardship was to murmur. Complaining stalls our spiritual growth and keeps us wandering in circles.
The great nineteenth-century preacher Charles Spurgeon addressed the corrosive nature of a complaining heart when he wrote:
“Get rid of a murmuring spirit. It is a spirit that is very painful to God, and very harmful to yourselves. A thankful heart is a singing heart, a praising heart, and a growing heart.”
When we choose to give up complaining, we instantly set ourselves apart from the rest of the world. In a culture dominated by bitterness, cynicism, and constant outrage, a believer who walks in consistent gratitude becomes a striking anomaly. We stop reflecting the darkness around us and start doing what sons and daughters are born to do: shine as radiant lights.
The twentieth-century author and apologist C.S. Lewis captured the essence of this internal transformation into Christlikeness:
“Every Christian is to become a little Christ. The whole purpose of becoming a Christian is simply nothing else.”
To live as a true son or daughter means allowing the Holy Spirit to kill the spirit of complaint within us. It means exchanging our murmurs for a lifestyle of praise, ensuring that our words and attitudes honor our Heavenly Father, and letting our lives be an undeniable testimony of His goodness to a watching world.
Daily Challenge
Go the entire day today without uttering a single complaint, whisper of dissatisfaction, or argument. Every single time you feel the temptation to complain about your circumstances, the weather, traffic, or another person, immediately pivot and vocalize three specific things you are thankful for. Use gratitude as a weapon to protect your identity as a child of God.
O Lord God, my Heavenly Father,
You are the Perfect Parent who loves me with an everlasting and unconditional love. I stand amazed that You have called me out of darkness and given me the legal right to be called Your child. Forgive me for the times I have forgotten my royal lineage and behaved like an orphan. Forgive me for the times I have allowed a spirit of complaining, murmuring, and disputing to defile my mouth and slow down my spiritual journey.
Holy Spirit, I ask that You perform a deep work within my heart today. Root out all bitterness, cynicism, and entitlement. When challenges arise and things do not go my way, guard my lips and anchor my thoughts in Your sovereignty. Help me to do all things without grumbling, so that my life remains blameless, pure, and distinct from the culture around me. Train me to speak the truth in perfect love and to carry myself with the dignity of the Kingdom.
Deliver me from the trap of seeking validation from a world that does not know You. Instead, let me find total security in my identity as Your child. Pour out a fresh mantle of praise upon me, that I may loudly proclaim Your goodness even in difficult environments. May my life shine so brightly in the midst of this crooked generation that others look at me and catch a glimpse of my Father in heaven.
In the mighty and mature name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
