“For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power.” 1 Corinthians 4:20
Day 4: Power Over Entertainment
In the message, Charlie Walker addresses a major crisis points within the modern church: the tragic tendency to substitute entertainment for true spiritual joy. Many contemporary ministries have drifted away from preaching the raw truth of the Word, opting instead to deliver diluted gospel messages filled with casual “chicken soup stories” and heavily prioritizing highly produced, seeker-friendly formats. To expose the empty nature of this approach, the sermon highlights a sobering truth from David Wilkerson, who stated that “a diluted gospel is no gospel at all”. Furthermore, evangelist Leonard Ravenhead noted that “entertainment is a substitute for joy in the house of God”. When a community of faith prioritizes worldly amusement over the holy presence of God, it sacrifices its true spiritual authority.
The vital antidote to a powerless, entertainment-driven faith is a fresh infusion of dunamis—the raw, supernatural power of the Holy Spirit. Charlie notes that much of the modern church is profoundly lacking this power because many mainline denominations are simply not open to the gifts and ministry of the Holy Spirit. Jesus did not call His followers to rely on clever production or human eloquence; rather, He commanded them to tarry until they received power from on high when the Holy Spirit came upon them. Without this vital baptism of the Holy Spirit, individual believers and local churches will lack the internal strength required to stand firmly for righteousness in the challenging days ahead.
To illustrate the reality of true spiritual power, the message recalls the extraordinary personal testimony of Charles Finney, one of America’s greatest historical revivalists. Finney described a profound encounter where he felt as though he met the Lord Jesus face-to-face, causing him to break down completely, weep aloud like a child, and bathe the Savior’s feet in tears. Shortly after, he received a mighty baptism of the Holy Ghost, noting that “the Holy Spirit descended upon me in a manner that seemed to come in waves of liquid love” and felt like “the very breath of God”. This kind of deep spiritual saturation is exactly what believers desperately need today. God does not grant us His dunamis power merely to make us feel emotionally elevated or superior; He gives it with a specific, outward purpose: to make us effective witnesses who can boldly bring others into a transforming relationship with Jesus Christ .
Reflective Questions
- In what areas of your daily routine have you allowed passive Christian entertainment or “feel-good” stories to substitute for a deep, challenging hunger for the raw power and Word of God?
- Are you actively seeking the baptism and continuous filling of the Holy Spirit (dunamis), or have you become comfortable practicing a form of faith that relies mostly on your own human strength and intellect?
- When you pray for spiritual power or blessings, is your ultimate motive to experience personal comfort, or is it to be an empowered witness who points the broken people around you to Jesus?
Life Application
- Exchange Entertainment for Deep Devotion: Choose one evening this week to intentionally turn off all digital media, television, and casual entertainment. Spend that dedicated block of time alone in your room, reading the direct text of Scripture and asking God to revive a pure, unadulterated hunger for His truth within your soul.
- Pray Aggressively for Dunamis: Follow the biblical pattern by spending time today intentionally asking the Lord to fill you afresh with the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Pray specifically for dunamis power to operate actively in your life so that you can stand firmly for righteousness without fear or compromise.
- Step Out as an Empowered Witness: Actively look for an opportunity today to share the love and truth of Jesus Christ with someone in your life who is lost or broken. Remember that God gives you His spiritual power not for self-glory, but so that you can be a living witness who draws others into a genuine relationship with Him.
Heavenly Father,
I confess that it is far too easy to settle for the cheap substitute of entertainment rather than seeking the authentic joy and power found only in Your presence. Forgive me for the times I have preferred comfortable, diluted messages over the sharp, life-changing truth of Your uncompromised Word. I do not want to live with a mere outward form of godliness while remaining utterly destitute of Your real spiritual power.
Lord, I ask today for a fresh, supernatural filling of Your Holy Spirit. I pray for the raw dunamis power that breaks chains, heals the brokenhearted, and establishes righteousness. Break me down in true humility at Your feet, just as You did with Charles Finney. Let Your Holy Spirit descend upon my heart in overwhelming waves of liquid love, completely transforming the way I live, think, and speak.
Strip away any lingering self-reliance or desire for personal credit. I ask that You ignite a consuming fire within me to be a bold, unashamed witness for Jesus Christ in a world covered in darkness. Use my life to disrupt the enemy’s plans and to lead lost souls into a real, lasting relationship with You.
In the mighty, authoritative name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
