“…that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.” 1 Corinthians 15:5–6

Day 3: Third-Party Confirmations

“To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.” ~ Thomas Aquinas

“I know the resurrection is a fact, and Watergate proved to me it was a fact. Because twelve men testified they had seen Christ risen from the dead, then they proclaimed that truth for forty years, never once denying it.” ~ Charles Colson

In the world of corporate accounting, an auditor cannot simply rely on what the company’s management says about their own finances. To verify the claims, the auditor must reach outside the company walls and seek what is called “Third-Party Confirmation”. They send letters directly to banks, lenders, and customers to verify that the balances on the internal ledger match the reality on the ground.

When we audit the claims of the Bible, we must look for these exact same third-party confirmations. We look to the hard sciences of archaeology and geography. For centuries, critics and skeptics argued that major portions of the biblical text were nothing more than pious myths. Yet, over and over again, the shovel of the archaeologist has pulled back the dirt to confirm the absolute accuracy of the biblical ledger.

Archaeology has repeatedly confirmed the existence of major biblical figures—like King David and Pontius Pilate—and ancient civilizations like the Hittites, all of whom were once dismissed as mythical by secular scholars. Exact geographic locations, such as the Pool of Siloam, have been uncovered precisely where the text said they would be.

However, as robust as this data is, we must acknowledge a fundamental boundary: science and history can audit the physical details, but they cannot directly “audit” the supernatural. No archeological dig can prove Jesus turned water into wine or walked on a stormy sea. Instead, the auditor relies on a basic principle of credibility: if the author’s verifiable material is meticulously correct, they can be relied upon to tell the truth about the miracles as well.

This is exactly why the Apostle Paul, when writing to the church in Corinth, provided a literal “Confirmation List”. In defending the reality of the resurrection, he didn’t just give an emotional testimony. He essentially said, “If you don’t believe my report, here are over five hundred third-party sources who saw Him alive at the exact same time—most of whom are still around for you to cross-examine and audit yourself”.

At some point, our logical investigation brings us right to the edge of the physical data, where we must acknowledge the faith required to accept the remaining five percent of audit risk. God has provided more than enough third-party data to make trust rational, inviting us to step forward with total confidence in His ledger.

Life Application

  • Examine the External Markers: When your personal feelings tell you that God is distant or that His Word is disconnected from reality, anchor your mind to the physical, geographical, and historical footprints He left behind in the world.
  • Be an Eyewitness Witness: Just as Paul pointed to five hundred witnesses to confirm the gospel, your changed life is a modern “third-party confirmation” to the people around you. Live with the kind of integrity that serves as an undeniable data point for the reality of Jesus.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does it strengthen your confidence to know that the Bible’s historical and geographical details repeatedly pass the test of external archeological audits?
  2. Why is it important to recognize that while history can verify the setting and the figures, a portion of our walk with God will always require faith to bridge the final audit risk?

Heavenly Father, the Sovereign Ruler of Time and Space,

We thank You that You did not build Your kingdom in a vacuum or separate Your truth from the physical world we inhabit. We praise You for the physical testimonies of archaeology, history, and geography that continually rise up from the dust to declare that Your Word is true.

Thank You for the cloud of witnesses—for the five hundred brothers and sisters who stood as an unshakeable confirmation list for the resurrection of Your Son. Lord, when our hearts grow weary or our minds are assaulted by skepticism, remind us of these independent data points. Remind us that the authors of Scripture wrote with the grounded accuracy of eyewitnesses.

Give us the grace to review the evidence with clear eyes, and give us the faith to trust You across the threshold where human history meets Your supernatural power. May our lives be living letters of confirmation to a world desperately looking for what is real.

In the brilliant and verified name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
