“But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first.” Revelation 2:4-5
“And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.’” Matthew 22:37-38
Day 7: First Love Rekindled
We have reached the culmination of our seven-day journey. Over the past six days, we have mapped out the sacred landscape of a life fully surrendered to Jesus Christ. We have reframed our ordinary routines into localized mission fields (Day 1), activated the invisible network of intercession (Day 2), discovered face-to-face communion through proseuche (Day 3), accessed supernatural power over spiritual strongholds (Day 4), fortified our minds with thanksgiving (Day 5), and embraced the restful rhythm of abiding in the Vine (Day 6).
Yet, all of these profound disciplines, strategies, and principles are ultimately held together by a singular, foundational reality: our First Love.
It is tragically possible to be a highly active, doctrinally sound, missionary-minded Christian and still lose your heart along the way. In Revelation 2, Jesus addresses the church in Ephesus with a terrifying mixture of praise and warning. The Ephesians were a remarkable people. They were hard-working, patient, unyielding in the face of evil, and fiercely committed to correct doctrine. By all modern standards, they were a model church. Yet, Jesus looked past their flawless resume and delivered a devastating diagnosis: “You have abandoned the love you had at first.” They were doing the work of God, but they had forgotten the God of the work.
True spiritual maturity is never measured merely by the volume of our activities, the correctness of our vocabulary, or the scale of our impact. It is measured by the intimacy of our affection for Jesus Christ. When our devotion becomes a duty rather than a delight, our spiritual fire begins to turn to ash. We must constantly return to that clean, uncomplicated space where Jesus is our greatest treasure, our highest joy, and our sole magnificent obsession. As the brilliant theologian A.W. Tozer once observed:
“The man who has God for his treasure has all things in One.”
When Jesus is your true treasure, the cost of discipleship ceases to be a burden. Sacrificing your comfort for the mission field, spending your midnight hours in intercession, or surrendering your self-will in the hidden spaces no longer feels like a painful loss—it becomes a joyful exchange. The legendary missionary martyr Jim Elliot captured this profound perspective perfectly when he penned his famous words:
“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
To rekindle your First Love requires a regular, intentional pausing of your life to gaze upon the beauty of Christ. It means setting aside your agendas, your prayer requests, and your strategic plans just to fall in love with Him all over again. Our relationship with God was never meant to be a cold, transactional contract; it was designed to be a living, breathing, eternal love story. St. Augustine expressed this beautifully when he wrote:
“To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek him the greatest adventure; to find him, the greatest human achievement.”
As you look forward to the weeks, months, and years ahead, do not let the noise of the world or even the demands of ministry drown out His still, small voice. Protect your first love above all else. When your heart is firmly anchored in an unshakeable affection for Jesus, your life will naturally become a continuous, powerful, and radiant demonstration of His Kingdom to a dark and waiting world.
Questions for Reflection
- The Ephesian Mirror: Looking closely at your own life, have you ever fallen into the “Ephesian Trap”—being busy, doctrinally correct, and active in service, yet lacking genuine, warm affection for Jesus? How can you spot the warning signs of a cooling heart before it hardens?
- The Joyful Exchange: What is something you are currently holding onto (a comfort, an ambition, a habit) that is competing with Jesus for the first place in your heart? How does Jim Elliot’s reminder change the way you view the “cost” of surrendering it?
- The Great Romance: When was the last time you sat in God’s presence purely to admire His character, thank Him for His love, and enjoy His company, without asking for a single thing? How can you make this a regular reality in your weekly routine?
Life Applications
- The “First Moments” Consecration: Dedicate the very first five minutes of your morning today—before you check your phone, look at your emails, or review your to-do list—solely to your First Love. Kneel or sit quietly, and speak words of adoration directly to Jesus. Start your day by declaring: “Lord, before I do anything for You today, I want to remind my soul that I love You simply for who You are.”
- The Heart Audit Journal: Take a blank piece of paper and write down the three things that currently consume most of your thoughts, your time, and your emotional energy. Examine this list honestly. If Jesus is not at the center, pray a prayer of repentance and intentionally schedule a specific block of time this week to fast, pray, and realign your priorities.
- Cultivate Holy Wonder: Intentionally put yourself in a position to experience holy wonder this week. Whether it is walking through nature, listening to deeply scriptural worship music in total silence, or meditating on the sheer scale of the cross, allow yourself to be overwhelmed by the reality of God’s grace until your heart is moved to spontaneous praise.
O Lord God, the First and the Last,
You are the One whose eyes are like a flame of fire, yet whose heart is filled with infinite, unshakeable mercy, I bow before You at the conclusion of this holy journey. I praise You that You are the Source, the Center, and the ultimate Destination of my soul. Thank You for these seven days of deep realignment, for calling me out of my complacency, and for inviting me into a life of supernatural power, global purpose, and intimate communion.
Father, I confess before You today that I have sometimes left my First Love. Forgive me for the times I have prioritized the work of Your Kingdom over intimacy with the King. Forgive me for the legalism of my performance, the coldness of my routine, and the pride that seeks to do Your will without Your heart. I hear Your gentle voice calling me to remember, to repent, and to return to the works I did at first. Today, I throw open the gates of my heart and invite You to take Your rightful place as the undisputed, supreme obsession of my life.
Holy Spirit, rekindle the fire of my devotion today. Let the precious blood of Jesus cleanse me from all spiritual apathy and lukewarmness. Anchor my identity so deeply in Your love that I am no longer shaken by the storms of life or distracted by the vanities of this world. May my daily mission field be fueled by Your affection, my intercession guided by Your heart, my communion filled with Your presence, and my life marked by a constant, irrepressible song of thanksgiving. Keep me abiding securely in the Vine as I step forward into the future You have prepared for me. May Jesus Christ be glorified in me, through me, and all around me, until the day I see Him face to face.
In His mighty, matchless, and everlasting name, I pray. Amen.
